About Akoya Pearls
Classic white Akoya pearls - the "gold standard" in cultured pearl jewelry! Taking their name from the Japanese word for the oyster that produces them, Akoya pearls are beautiful, moderate-sized, spherical peals,white or cream colored ideally with a faint rose overtone. They are renowned for their exquisite luster.
Akoya pearls are often graded on a scale from A through AAA. Pearl stramds exceeding the AAA standards are labeled Hanadama grade, and sold with a numbered certificate from Japan's Pearl Science Laboratory.
