The most prized pearls of all, south sea pearls, are produced one by one by Pinctada maxima - the South Sea Oyster. Taking 18-36 months for each pearl to mature, South Sea Pearls come in white, silver or golden hues and are a large pearl (average size 10-15mm) with a spectacular, satiny luster.
Smaller South Sea Pearls hail from Indonesian hatcheries, and are somewhat less costly than their Australian or Philippine counterparts.
