Chocolate Pearls first burst upon the fashion scene when the Ballerina Pearl Company developed a unique process for bleaching Tahitian pearls to produce a luscious chocolaty-bronze color while retaining most of the characteristic Tahitian pearl luster. These new brown pearls were popularized by Erica Courtney - a designer who adorns many Hollywood starlets for their red carpet appearances.
Since then, other companies have come up with their own processes for creating chocolate color in Tahitian pearls. Inexpensive brown pearls can be produced by dyeing fresh water pearls.
The rich, earth-tones of brown pearls are at their most dramatic when offset by gleaming gold settings and pave white or brown "chocolate" diamonds.
