Besides being a lovely keepsake, pearl jewelry is a charming accessory for your child. However, it is important that you only let children wear jewelry that's appropriate and safe for their age:
Babies and Toddlers:
The safest items for this age group are simple, stud earrings- preferably ones with screw backs, as even the most curious toddler will lack the dexterity to remove them. Necklaces, bracelets and other types of earrings should be worn only with close supervision. Be wary of potential choking hazards - for this reason, we don't recommend rings for youngsters this age.
School Age Children:
Once children are school age, responsibility comes into play as the hazards shift from swallowing or choking on jewelry to breaking it or losing it. Avoid necklaces, chains, drop earrings, and anything else that can get easily caught on things, especially during playtime.
While some recommend costume jewelry for kids, gold or sterling silver is actually safer because you know it won't contain lead or other mystery metals. If your child is allergy-prone, you might want to go with yellow gold, as white gold and silver can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. Jewelry in 10kt gold is durable and affordable - it will hold up to a fair amount of abuse and won't cost your kid's college fund to replace if lost!
