The term baroque is used to refer to any pearl which is irregular (non-spherical and asymmetrical) in shape. Most baroque pearls are fresh water pearls, but oddly-shaped tahitian and south-sea pearls are sometimes seen. A strand of off-round pearls is less expensive than a strand of perfectly matched spherical ones of a similar size.
While round pearls are traditionally considered to be the most desirable, baroque pearls have a rugged beauty all their own. Very large and uniquely shaped pearls with exquisite luster are sometimes used as the center stone in couture rings, pendants and brooches to create one-of-a-kind pieces which command high prices.
